I have worked for many years in the art department of a large FE college alongside inspirational students all with special needs. These people had endless capacity to create unique and beautiful things often with discarded materials. Now that I am retired, I have more time to pick up my own work.

Description of Catherine’s artwork appearing in CirculART
My work is painting on recycled boards. I paint two types: 1) imaginary portraits and 2) childhood. The imaginary portraits are of women lost to a mainstream historical narrative. The bigger ones are about the lost world of Catherine’s childhood.

What repurposed materials does Catherine use
The works are done in acrylic. I like as far as possible to utilise scrap wood. These are boards from off cut bins at wood yards. I also buy paint from charity shops.

Why Catherine chooses to use repurposed materials
Waste of resources is one of the great problems of the age as is the responsible disposal of nightmarish quantities of useless stuff.
