Perhaps it is because many women’s lives are subsumed in the mess of the body and the home, that women artists have explored the abject and the domestic, themes I find recurring in my own work. In keeping with the domestic subject matter of my work, my techniques are low-tech, and my materials of choice are easily to hand, cheap and frequently recycled. I choose to work from home rather than from a dedicated studio space because I value the interaction between the work I make and the stuff of daily living.

My first degree is in textiles, and in 2013 I completed an MA in print making at Cambridge School of Art, ARU. Since graduating, I have shown regularly in Cambridge, often in public spaces such as the street, shops and festivals. My work is informed by feminist theory and alongside my practice, for my PhD I am researching the role of art in countering domestic abuse.

Description of Jane’s artwork appearing in CirculART
A row of posable, waste cardboard puppets on sticks, wearing copies of outfits selected from stock in Jane’s two favourite clothes shops.

Why Jane chooses to use repurposed materials
I use repurposed materials to help preserve natural resources, and because I am happier when I resist being drawn into the over-consumption inherent in consumerism.
