For as long as I can remember I have surrounded myself with yarn and fabric to create things by crochet, knitting and sewing. Rarely throwing any materials away I now have a hoard of yarn and fabric regularly raided by my grandchildren for their own projects. I crochet and knit while travelling, waiting for appointments, watching TV and sitting in meetings. Sewing is now mainly practical: making bags, curtains, cushions, quilts and patching jeans. For me, a patchwork quilt is just that — made from patches and scraps, not new fabric.

Tatty books become book hedgehogs. Fabric scraps are turned into bags and lavender bags, leftover yarn into bears, dolls’ clothes, blankets, waistcoats and shawls.

Why Katherine chooses to use repurposed materials
I enjoy making ‘something from nothing’, designing and using fabric and yarn remaining from earlier projects. 75g fine one-ply machine knitting yarn becomes a shawl.
